This study explores in-depth the concept of freedom to marry within the framework of the Catholic Church’s Canon Law by examining three contemporary issues: the legal–moral capacity of prospective spouses, the Church’s position on same-sex marriage, and the juridical–moral status of couples who intentionally choose not to have children (childfree). Grounded in the Church’s teaching that marriage is a sacrament between one man and one woman—permanent, exclusive, and open to the gift of life—this research highlights that freedom and canonical capacity constitute fundamental prerequisites for the validity of the sacrament. Employing a qualitative approach through juridical-canonical analysis of the Code of Canon Law, magisterial documents, and contemporary moral theological scholarship, the study demonstrates that interior freedom and psychological maturity are essential elements in the giving of matrimonial consent. Furthermore, canonical impediments are understood as mechanisms safeguarding the integrity of the sacrament. Same-sex unions cannot be recognized either naturally or sacramentally, as they fail to fulfill the unitive and procreative dimensions of marriage. Likewise, an explicitly intended childfree choice may affect the validity of marriage as stipulated in Canon Law. The findings affirm the internal coherence of Canon Law in addressing modern moral challenges and present practical implications for marriage preparation, pastoral accompaniment, and moral formation. Consequently, this research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of freedom to marry, the sacramental purpose of matrimony, and the juridical and pastoral issues emerging within contemporary social contexts.
Yanto Sandy TjangMayong Andreas Acin

https://e-jurnalstpbonaventura.ac.id/index.php/JURKAPS/article/view/148

Abstract

The Selapanan ritual in Javanese tradition is a form of spiritual expression that is very full of meaning, beyond just a cultural celebration. This research aims to explore in depth the understanding of divinity reflected in the selapanan ritual, focusing on the concept of Kang Murbeng Dumadi as the highest entity. The case study was conducted in Jomegatan Village, Kapanewon Kasihan, Bantul, an area that continues to preserve this tradition. Using a qualitative method that combines literature study with in-depth interviews with local culturists, this research examines how theological values are realised through processions and symbols in the selapanan ritual. The results show that the understanding of Kang Murbeng Dumadi as the Creator and Sustainer of life is manifested concretely in ritual symbols. Symbols such as tumpeng symbolise orientation of life to God, the colour of jenang represents spiritual protection (Sedulur Papat Kalimo Pancer), and the lamp symbolises the illumination of the path of life. It is concluded that the selapanan ritual in Jomegatan Village is not only a traditional heritage, but also a medium for the actualisation of a dynamic understanding of divinity, which reflects the harmonious relationship between humans, nature and the Creator in the midst of the times. Despite changes and developments in terms of expression and form, the main essence of selapanan has not changed, which is to ask for safety from the Almighty for the baby's life journey with the family and people around him.
Emanuel Yuliman

Dayak Krio's indigenous culture vis a vis consumerist culture is quite disturbing and unsettling. This is in line with a trend specifically highlighted by Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si'. In this paper I would like to elaborate on my own culture, the Dayak Krio culture, in its challenge to the consumeristic culture in the perspectives raised by the Holy Father in the encyclical. For the Holy Father, culture is the preserving agent of the universe. This role is aligned with the Dayak Krio cultural practice of balako bahuma. This congruence of role and action is being confronted by another factor that brings a consumeristic culture into people's lives. This factor is caused by giant capitalist projects. The study found that returning to nature and learning from local cultures is an ethical and practical imperative of modern man today given the catastrophic dangers of nature that are ready to threaten at any time as a result of human consumerist deforestation.

Agustinus Tamtama Putra

This paper aims to describe the belief system of the Timor Island community (Atoni Pah Meto). In general, it can be summarized that the Atoni Pah Meto believe in Uis Neno (God of Heaven) and Uis Pah (God/Mother Earth). This belief system makes the Atoni Pah Meto aware of the existence of transcendent power, but at the same time, this belief also believes that this transcendent power bestows His blessings through the earth. Therefore, the earth is seen as the Mother who gives life. The implications of this belief can also be seen in how the Atoni Pah Meto preserve nature. Using the theoretical foundation of perennialism philosophy, the author will further examine this topic and also see what positive values exist within the Atoni Pah Meto belief system for the sustainability of religious life and daily practice.
Rolin Ferdilianto Sandelgus Taneo

This article examines, from a pastoral perspective, the transformation of priestly leadership in the Catholic Church from a pastor-centered model to a form of leadership that actively involves all the faithful. The synodal movement, reaffirmed by Pope Francis, positions the Church as the People of God journeying together in listening to the Holy Spirit and discerning God’s will. Within this framework, priestly leadership is no longer understood as a structure of control or a locus of unilateral decision-making, but rather as a ministry characterized by dialogue, collaboration, and participation. Drawing on ecclesial documents such as Lumen Gentium, Presbyterorum Ordinis, Pastores Dabo Vobis, Evangelii Gaudium, and the Code of Canon Law, this article argues that the identity of the priest as cooperator ordinis episcoporum demands the capacity to unite the faithful, to build spaces for communal discernment, and to empower the charisms of the baptized within the life of the Church. This study affirms that in a synodal Church, priests are called to be shepherds who listen, cultivate spiritual dialogue, and lead the community collaboratively toward its evangelizing mission. Consequently, priestly leadership develops from a centralistic pattern into a form that strengthens the participation of the entire People of God, enabling the Church to remain faithful to its synodal nature as a community of communion and mission.
ambros ratuFransiskus Djo

Berger.
This study explores in depth the practice of tattooing as a bodily expression imbued with personal and spiritual meaning in contemporary human life, particularly when examined in relation to the Catholic understanding of the dignity of the human body. The body is not viewed merely as a space for individual self-expression, but as an integral dimension of the human person, created in the image and likeness of God. Employing a qualitative method through a theological and pastoral reflective approach, this study relies on a literature review of official Church documents, theological works, and relevant scholarly journal articles. The findings indicate that tattoo practices cannot be assessed in a uniform or purely normative manner, as their meaning is closely shaped by personal motivation, socio-cultural context, and their relationship to moral responsibility and faith life. From a pastoral perspective, the presence of tattoos within the life of the Church presents both challenges and opportunities for fostering more personal and contextual faith-based dialogue. This study underscores the need for a wise and compassionate pastoral attitude, enabling the Church to accompany the faithful so that tattoo practices may be understood as part of the human journey in seeking meaning and living out the Catholic faith maturely amid ongoing changes in body culture.
Roida SihombingAndeas Mayong Acin
